Hello,
I hope all is well.
The question of the day is from a senior citizen, “Do you know how I am doing today?”
To my caregivers, do you know how your Senior Loved One (SLO) is doing today? Can you actually answer this question?
Every day, when I was caring for my Granny, I would go to her house and the first thing I would say and I quote: “Hi Granny, how are you doing today?” She would always answer me and from her answer, I knew exactly how she was doing and feeling. I made it my business to ask Granny, as I did not want to assume how she was doing or feeling. This was also an open opportunity for Granny to let me know if something was wrong and for us to spend quality time with each other.
To the caregivers in the world, please remember just like you, your Senior Loved One has good and bad days too. You can’t assume that everything is ok. Your SLO may be dealing with constipation, depression, just want to talk about good old memories, may want to let you know about that upsetting or uplifting call he/she received etc. If you don’t take the time to ask your SLO how he/she is doing not just a few times a month, but every time you speak to your SLO then how will you know how he/she feels.
This one question can help you care for your Senior Loved One. Think about it…
The power of caring allows us to ask questions and leave assumptions at the door.
Forever care,
Angela
